AMARETTO HOT CHOCOLATE

This decadent hot chocolate is a family favorite—especially at the holidays. The sweet almond liqueur adds a deliciously festive kick, but you can leave it out of the base recipe for a family friendly version, then stir an ounce of liqueur into individual mugs for those who want to partake. Just don’t skip the whipped cream!

 

AMARETTO HOT CHOCOLATE


Amaretto is an almond-flavored Italian liqueur, adding a nutty, sweet flavor to this luxe hot chocolate. Feel free to sub in your favorite liqueur (Grand Marnier, Kahlua, and crème de menthe are all excellent choices) or skip the booze altogether.

INGREDIENTS

•   5 cups whole milk

•   2 tablespoons superfine sugar

•   10 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

•   1 teaspoon vanilla extract

•   4 ounces (8 tablespoons) amaretto liqueur

•   fresh whipped cream

•   1/4 cup sliced almonds, lightly toasted


INSTRUCTIONS

1.     Warm milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a low simmer. Turn off heat, then add sugar, chocolate, and vanilla to pan, whisking until completely smooth. 

2.     Whisk in amaretto and divide between four mugs. Top each with a generous dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of almonds.
